KLA has offered me many benefits. One of the most useful is access to knowledge and cheap therapy. Library workers are a sharing lot who are willing to share what works for them. They also share what is happening at their libraries and sometimes I have found out information that I had not been given by my administration. The cheap therapy comes from the library worker's ability to have either a good listening ear or the skills they picked up as bartenders working their way through school. The proper professional word for all of this is probably networking.
Also, if you are involved in the organization long enough, you begin to see who the leaders are in certain areas, whether THEY recognize it or not. These are the people you get sent to when you have questions about certain topics because they are "the one that you need to talk to." Use their knowledge to help you with your work.
KLA membership also offers chances to exercise leadership and to receive professional development and funds for continuing education. The committee work and chances to serve as officers develops leadership skills. The organization is also great with providing conferences with topics to help you advance in your profession and to even to be "not in
